Restoring Our Land: Saudi Arabia to host World Environment Day 2024
As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is set to take centre stage on June 5th, hosting World Environment Day 2024. This year’s focus is on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience- issues that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is very familiar with. The theme, which will be highlighted in this year’s campaign, underscores the urgent need for global action to address the degradation of our planet’s vital ecosystems.
Saudi Arabia Hosting World Environment Day 2024: What to Expect
Land degradation and desertification
Land degradation refers to the deterioration of the quality and productivity of land, often caused by human activities such as deforestation, unsustainable agriculture, urbanisation, and industrialisation. All of these factors contribute to the reduction of soil fertility, biodiversity, and vegetation cover, making the land less capable of supporting life.
Desertification, on the other hand, refers to the transformation of productive land into desert due to factors like climate change, overgrazing, and improper land management practices. Both land degradation and desertification have severe consequences, including reduced agricultural productivity, loss of habitat for wildlife, and increased risk of natural disasters such as floods and droughts. Combating these issues requires a united effort to implement sustainable land management practices, restore degraded ecosystems, and reduce the impacts of climate change.
Saudi Arabia’s contribution to sustainability
With up to 40 percent of the Earth's land already degraded, the consequences reverberate across ecosystems and communities worldwide. Desertification and drought exacerbate these challenges, threatening livelihoods, biodiversity, and economic stability.
The choice of Saudi Arabia as the host country for World Environment Day 2024 holds significant symbolism. With vast desert landscapes and a unique ecological environment, Saudi Arabia is well acquainted with the challenges of land degradation, desertification, and water scarcity. By assuming the role of host this year, the Kingdom underscores its commitment to spearheading solutions and fostering international collaboration.
Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister for Environment, Dr. Osama Faqeeha emphasized that World Environment Day in Saudi Arabia will shine a spotlight on the pressing need for global investments in conserving nature, rejuvenating lands, and advancing sustainability goals.
He stressed the significance of rallying both national and international efforts to protect and rehabilitate ecosystems worldwide, with the aim of achieving sustainable development objectives.
What does the future hold?
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warned that without intervention, 95% of the Earth's land could degrade within the next three decades, posing grave threats to humanity and the planet.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, alongside the warnings for the future, the UNEP also highlighted the transformative impact of previous campaigns in galvanizing climate action worldwide. Initiatives like World Environment Day play an important role in helping to drive global awareness and action. Nations worldwide have pledged to restore one billion hectares of land, with targets to safeguard 30% of both land and sea for nature while restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. Aligned with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, World Environment Day 2024 will bolster climate action endeavours by garnering support for ecosystem restoration.
What can we do as individuals to support World Environment Day?
To support World Environment Day, we as people, communities, businesses, and governments all need to step up and make real changes. Things like planting more trees, managing land better, and using new technologies can help us undo the damage we've done and make sure the Earth is healthy for the future.
In Saudi Arabia and around the world, taking care of the environment isn't just a good idea—it's essential. By investing in nature-friendly solutions, switching to renewable energy, and coming up with new eco-friendly ideas, we can make our world stronger and richer.
As World Environment Day gets closer, let's remember to act. It's a chance for all of us to come together and do our part in saving our planet's precious ecosystems. The time to make a difference is right now.
