We’re thrilled to unveil the J Collection—our latest venture into luxury, where tradition meets modern elegance and sustainable fashion. This new collection pays homage to the centuries-old Bavani Jamakkalam weaving tradition, skilfully reimagined by Vino into premium handbags that embody craftsmanship, reinvention, and timeless design.

The J Collection by Vino Supraja: Heritage Weaving Meets Modern Luxury Handbags

What is Bavani Jamakkalam?

Bavani Jamakkalam is a traditional handwoven textile from the town of Bavani in Tamil Nadu, India. Known for its striking geometric patterns and vibrant colours, this durable cotton fabric was historically a staple in households, used as floor coverings and for various domestic purposes. The weaving process involves dyeing only the weft threads while keeping the warp threads white, creating a distinct striped effect.

The Idea

As a fashion student in Shanghai, Vino was deeply inspired by how luxury brands establish strong visual identities. Their distinct design elements make them instantly recognisable, and she wondered—could a textile from her own heritage achieve the same? The bold, geometric stripes of Bavani Jamakkalam offered that potential. Despite its long-standing tradition, the pattern felt modern, minimal, and perfectly balanced. At the time, a thought took root: could these stripes become the signature of a luxury brand?

Giving tradition a new purpose

Years later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this idea resurfaced. While living in Delhi, Vino encountered Bavani weavers at the Red Fort, where they were showcasing their craft. She purchased a freshly woven Jamakkalam and began exploring ways to use the textile beyond its conventional role as a floor covering.

When Vino finally travelled to Bavani, what she witnessed was disheartening. A town that once housed 5,000 looms had dwindled to a mere fraction of that number. Most of the weavers were elderly, and the younger generation showed little interest in continuing the craft due to diminishing business prospects. Rows of broken looms covered in cobwebs told the story of a fading legacy. Traditional lifestyles had changed—people no longer sat on the floor, and the textile’s use as rugs alone was no longer sustainable. The only way to preserve this heritage was to transform it.

Crafting the J Collection

The simplest yet most impactful way to begin this transformation was through handbags. But these couldn’t just be ordinary bags—they had to be positioned as premium products on the global stage. Luxury brands justify their value through heritage, craftsmanship, and exclusivity. Bavani weaving boasts a history older than many luxury brands, making it the perfect foundation for high-end fashion.

To begin the project, Vino embarked on an extensive study, visiting every luxury store in Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue, analysing details—bag shapes, finishing techniques, best-selling designs, logo placements, colour palettes, and what ultimately makes a product premium. She built mood boards and used these insights to create the J Collection with uncompromising standards.

Custom Weaving & Sourcing Materials

Once the designs were finalized, we partnered with the Centre for Weavers at Kumaraguru Institutions in Coimbatore. This institution nurtures Bavani’s master weavers, providing them with opportunities to sustain their craft. We sourced high-quality cotton yarns, dyed them using traditional techniques, and designed custom stripe patterns tailored to our bag designs. Every step was carefully documented to ensure authenticity and transparency.

Overcoming Challenges with Innovation

Transforming a heritage textile into a luxury product came with unique challenges though. Bavani Jamakkalam weaving keeps warp threads white while dyeing only the weft, creating bold stripes. However, when cut and stitched, the hidden white threads became visible. Instead of seeing this as a flaw, we embraced it—making it a signature design element that enhances the authenticity of our collection.

Another challenge was achieving the perfect gold-tone consistency in our hardware—from zippers to logo accents—which required meticulous attention to detail. Finding the right dyes was also an extensive process. Today, synthetic dyes dominate the market, but we sought to revive traditional methods to achieve rich, long-lasting colours.

The J Collection: A Global Debut

After months of refining, we’re proud to introduce the J Collection to the world. Now available in Dubai, Singapore, and online for global shipping, our collection brings traditional craftsmanship into contemporary luxury, ensuring that Bavani weavers gain the recognition they deserve.

As with all of our fashion pieces, the J Collection isn’t just about handbags—it’s about redefining luxury in a way that ensures a low impact on the planet and ethical treatment of skilled artisans. With the J Collection, Vino is preserving a legacy in a truly sustainable way, and that’s why sharing the origin story of these bags is so important.
