The Inspiration: Gaudí’s Casa Vicens España

Antoni Gaudí was a Catalan architect and designer whose work in and around Barcelona is recognised internationally. Known for his modernist buildings, his 1883 to 1888 masterpiece Casa Vicens is a marvel that emerged during his orientalist period. Influenced by his love of art from the likes of India, Persia, and Japan—as well as Hispanic Islamic art like Mudéjar and Nasrid, the building is a celebration of colour, nature, and geometry, filled with vibrant ceramic tiles, floral motifs, and intricate patterns.
